Crowcaller Boss Guide: Three Phases, Nature's Grasp Cheese, and Drops
Draven the Crowcaller is Chapter 5's final boss in the Abyss — a three-phase duel won with grapple staggers, air dodges, and one famous tree-trunk trick.
Draven the Crowcaller is the feather-clad swordsman who caps Chapter 5 — fought at the Crow’s Nest in the Abyss during the “Black and White” sub-chapter, after assailants raid the Axiom Archive and abduct White Crow. It is a rematch with a much-expanded moveset, and IGN ranks him among the toughest fights in the game if your gear and Abyss Gears are under-leveled.
Getting to the arena
The Crow’s Nest sits on an Abyss sky island reached through a yellow Abyss Gate inside Hernand Castle — crossed via the Crescent Skybridge. Before the boss, you must clear a pack of Crow Brother minions; a cutscene introduces the Crowcaller, and he attacks the moment it ends — have your shield up.
The fight: three phases
- Constant motion — he darts around the arena, flipping and dashing away from your attacks. Chasing him drains you; make him commit first.
- Twin swords — his combos eat stamina fast and even chip through your shield, so bring real cooked meals, not raw ingredients (see the cooking guide).
- Shadow Dance — a stance that launches three teleporting strikes from the air, hard to telegraph. The clean answer is altitude: use Aerial Force Palm to double- or triple-jump over it instead of timing dodges.
- Phase 3 — he switches to relentless melee flurries across the battlefield. Hold block liberally: most of his melee strings deal only small stamina damage, and a blocked combo creates a small window to grapple him to the ground.
- Blue glow, crossed swords — he is about to dive-bomb. Don’t attack; just move.
Winning strategies
The intended route — stagger him:
- Grappling skills build stagger fast — the Lariat Follow-Up upgrade lets you chain Lariat repeatedly and fill his stagger bar in seconds. Invest beforehand via the skill tree.
- When he staggers, dump burst: Turning Slash shaves a chunk of his bar — the Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom adds +35% Turning Slash damage if you have it.
- A leg sweep works too: roll-dodge into an unarmed attack to trip him, then land a high-damage ground stab.
The famous cheese — Nature’s Grasp:
The Crow’s Nest is full of trees. Lure the Crowcaller into attacking and breaking them, then use Nature’s Grasp to pick up a tree trunk and choose “slam” while facing him — the hit reportedly costs him his entire health bar in phases 1 and 3. Two cautions: you sweep right-to-left so aim true, and if a trunk takes a second hit it breaks into useless timber — don’t let him smash them before you’re ready.
Rewards
- Blackwing Leather Armor
- Blackwing Mask
- Tauria Curved Sword — its Crow’s Pursuit ability fires an explosive crow projectile, a safe ranged option that pays off immediately against Myurdin’s Chapter 7 rematch.
