Abyss Artifacts and Boss Rewards in Crimson Desert Explained
Abyss Artifacts power the skill tree, bosses drop unique gear and skills, and faction quests pay out rare loot. How Crimson Desert's reward economy works.
Crimson Desert’s progression economy runs on Abyss Artifacts — the currency that unlocks and upgrades skills and raises Kliff’s Health and Stamina pools. Bosses, hidden caches, and quests all pay them out. Around that currency sit richer reward tiers: unique boss gear, skill unlocks, Abyss Gear, and rare crafting materials.
What are Abyss Artifacts used for?
Artifacts feed directly into the three-branch skill tree:
- Unlocking standard skills — most nodes in the Blue (Stamina), Green (Spirit), and Red (Health) trees cost Artifacts.
- Upgrading skills — multi-level skills like Grappling consume Artifacts per rank.
- Raising core stats — the Stamina, Spirit, and Health stat nodes at the heart of each branch.
Two unlock paths bypass Artifacts entirely: some skills are learned by observing enemies or NPCs perform the technique — Force Palm, for instance, is learned in Chapter 1 by watching an NPC demonstrate it — and others come from Axiom energy sources in the world. See the skill tree guide for the full list.
What do bosses actually drop?
Boss loot falls into four buckets, verified across the launch roster:
| Boss | Notable drops |
|---|---|
| White Horn | Abyss Artifact, Frost Hail Abyss Gear, White Horn’s Earring |
| Staglord | Abyss Artifact, Staglord’s Shield, Turning Slash Expertise (skill upgrade) |
| Reed Devil | Sunset Reed Cloth Gloves, Swift Stab (inner skill), Contribution EXP |
| Queen Stoneback Crab | Diamonds, Garnets, Azurite — the gems crusted on her shell |
| Hexe Marie | Earring of Dark Magic (accessory), Crow Whisperer (two-handed weapon) |
| Kearush the Slayer | The Grove’s Thorn (one-handed mace), Gale I and Howling of Chaos Abyss Gears |
| Crowcaller | Blackwing Leather Armor + Mask, Tauria Curved Sword |
| Myurdin | Melted Ambition, 3,000 Pailunese Contribution EXP |
The pattern holds across the roster: gear the boss wore, skills the boss used, materials the boss was made of. If a boss wields or wears something interesting, finishing the fight usually puts it in your hands.
Abyss Gear and the Abyss economy
Beyond normal equipment, bosses and the Abyss itself pay out Abyss Gear — equipment tied to the game’s mystical dimension — and Abyss Cressets scattered across the open world serve double duty: activating one marks a fast-travel point and frequently yields an extra Abyss Artifact. The Cresset next to Reed Devil’s arena is a good example — grab it before pulling the boss.
Where do Abyss Artifacts come from?
- Named bosses — guaranteed drops from story and faction encounters
- Abyss Cressets and hidden caches — exploration rewards across all five regions
- Quests — main story, faction chains, and side quests
The bosses overview maps which encounters pay out — boss hunting is the fastest repeatable Artifact income in the game, and the combat system guide covers the mechanics that make the hunts faster.
