Pywel is huge — master Crimson Desert's traversal: stamina-budgeted climbing, the crow-wing Flight skill, Axiom Force grappling, mounts, and fast travel.

Crimson Desert Traversal Guide: Climbing, Flight, Axiom Force, and Mounts

Pywel’s map is enormous, and Crimson Desert hands you a toolbox instead of a single superpower. The trick is chaining: a mount covers open ground, climbing creates height, character skills extend the route, Flight converts height into distance, and fast travel deletes the return trip.

Stamina is the route budget

Climbing, sprinting, Flight, and several combat skills all draw from one Stamina bar — which makes Breath of the Abyss the best early stat investment even for combat builds (see the skill tree guide). Two habits matter more than bar size:

  • Start climbs at full Stamina; if it empties mid-cliff, you fall. Eat a stamina-boosting meal before long climbs (see cooking).
  • Use flat ledges to recover mid-climb, and only open Flight after confirming the landing point is in range.

The vertical toolkit

  • Climbing — walk into most rock faces and press jump. Nearly every cliff is climbable; the limit is stamina, not permission.
  • Double Jump — buy it early; free “Watch and Learn” skill opportunities sometimes offer it.
  • Flight — the crow-wing glider, a story reward from the “Woman in White” quest in Hernand: solve its puzzles, meet White Crow the Witch, and she gives you the wings. Deploy while airborne, hold the button for faster gliding at higher stamina drain, and upgrade duration with Abyss Artifacts. It’s a glide, not true flight — you always descend.
  • Axiom Force — Kliff’s grapple-and-manipulate power, unlocked through the main story’s Abyss questline. Upgraded with Aerial Maneuver and Aerial Swing it becomes a physics slingshot: grapple to your anchor, then convert the swing into horizontal speed. Chained with Flight, it is the fastest way across Pywel without a loading screen.
  • Character-vertical skills — each playable character gets their own height tool (Aerial Force Palm, Skystep, Vertical Flight). Pick the one matching who you actually play — see playable characters.

Mounts

  • Horses — the bread and butter. Wild horses can be tamed; once registered they’re summonable.
  • Wyvern — a tameable flying mount available relatively early: about 15 minutes of flight on a ~50-minute cooldown, so treat it as a sprint, not a commute.
  • Exotics — guides report late-game oddities: bears (slower but tanky, with damage-dealing charges), plus mechanical and draconic rides. Verify in your own playthrough — availability shifts with updates.

Fast travel

Fast travel points must be manually discovered — no automatic unlocks:

  • Blinding Flash — hold the lantern button and attack; glints of light mark nearby Abyss spots, artifacts, nexuses, and cressets. Fire it from hilltops for maximum coverage.
  • Guiding Light — with your sword drawn, highlights nearby points with a blue glow.
  • Cressets — the beacons that anchor the fast-travel network. Prioritize lighting them in every new region, including the faction-quest regions covered in the faction quests guide.
